Sip the Legacy: From Humble Roots to Washington’s Premier Winery

Before it became the global benchmark for Pacific Northwest winemaking, Chateau Ste. Michelle’s story began in 1934 under the name Pomerelle Wine Company. Blending local agricultural tradition with passion, Pomerelle later merged with NAWICO (Northwest Wine Company) in 1954 to pioneer the commercial planting of European Vitis vinifera grape vines in Washington’s Columbia Valley.

In 1967, under the guidance of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff, a groundbreaking line of vinifera wines was introduced under the name Ste. Michelle Vintners. The landmark chateau itself was built in Woodinville in 1976—formally establishing Chateau Ste. Michelle.

From pioneering cold-climate viticulture to putting Washington State on the world wine map through terroir-driven innovation, Chateau Ste. Michelle remains the most iconic winery in the state and a true leader shaping the future of American wine.
